What is Wastewater Pretreatment?

December 5, 2022 by infomax

Wastewater treatment gives us access to clean water that can be used for many purposes. Wastewater pretreatment is a process that’s used to remove solid waste in the water. This includes dissolved solids, metals, and synthetic chemicals. Keep reading to learn more about this chemical pretreatment.

What is Wastewater Pretreatment?

Wastewater pretreatment is the process of collecting water from industrial plants and facilities, then using chemical pretreatment to remove solid waste from that water. The goal is to remove industrial waste from the water before it’s sent to a sewer system. While industrial wastewater treatment facilities can get rid of many types of solid waste, that’s not necessarily the case with a publicly owned wastewater treatment plant. Removing harsh chemicals and other difficult solid waste is the essential goal of the wastewater pretreatment process.

Industrial Waste

Publicly owned wastewater treatment plants are generally designed to treat the basic types of wastewater that come from homes. Industrial waste contains different chemicals that may be more difficult to remove, so wastewater pretreatment plants are basically designed to turn industrial wastewater into residential wastewater before dumping it in a sewer system. The exact pretreatment process may vary a bit depending on the type of waste that’s being treated, but it’s essential that industrial waste passes through a pretreatment facility.

Minimizing Wastewater Pretreatment

The reason wastewater pretreatment is necessary is that wastewater from industrial facilities tends to contain more solid waste and harsh chemicals. So, what can businesses do to minimize the amount of required wastewater pretreatment? Recycling is a good first step, whether you’re recycling plastics and metals or taking oil and other liquids to a recycling center. It’s also important for industrial facilities to find more environmentally friendly ways of operating. Whether that means switching to natural alternatives or investing in equipment that refines your processes. The less wastewater industrial plants and facilities create, the better.

While the average person thinks of public works when they think of wastewater treatment, it’s a two-step process. Wastewater pretreatment is an essential part of removing some of the chemicals from industrial wastewater and making it suitable for a sewer system.
