The Homeowners Guide to Cleaning Hardwood Floors
In most homes, the floor is one of the easiest spots to collect dirt and other debris. Not all floors are equal and some need to be cleaned in different ways. Paying for the services of floor cleaners is always one convenient option but, with the right guidance, you can take this project on yourself. See the guide below for the best ways to clean hardwood floors.
The first step is sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Only use a vacuum if it has a hard floor setting, otherwise, the brush roll on most vacuums might scratch the floor with its hard bristles. Furthermore, models with rubber wheels will be even better at not leaving scratches on the surface.
The second step is mopping the floor. Make sure not to wet the mop too heavily, it should be lightly damp and mostly wrung out. Leaving standing water on the wood surface can damage it. This is especially the case for pre-finished floors, which may allow water to seep into the floor.
The third, and possibly most overlooked, step is revitalizing the floor. Once the floor has been fully cleaned, a floor polish needs to be applied to protect the surface further and restore the shine. Make sure to apply it with the grain of the wood.
