How to Prevent Pipeline Corrosion
This video gives a solid explanation of how to prevent pipeline corrosion. The video starts by pointing out that interstate natural gas transmission pipelines in the United States are already deemed safe. That’s because care is taken during the design process and rigorous maintenance procedures are put into place. This helps to protect against corrosion which is a natural phenomenon that happens all around us. The good news is if the right material and construction techniques are used, pipeline corrosion is fully preventable.
The video gives an example of how corrosion happens when a piece of metal is buried in the soil and starts generating an electric current. It talks about how corrosion can be provided by first coating the pipeline with a corrosion resistant material called fusion bonded epoxy. Next, the pipeline is protected from corrosion after installation through a problem called cathodic protection. This prevents the flow of any electric current from the pipeline to the soil. Though there are many technical issues to understand, the video does a good job of explaining how to ensure long-term pipeline integrity, which is crucial to the delivery of safe, natural gas wherever it’s needed.
